In December 2018, the EC, European Parliament and European Council finally reached an agreement to reduce CO2 emissions by 37.5% by 2030 for cars and 31% for vans, compared to the 2021 level. Both types of vehicle will also be subject to an interim CO2 reduction target of 15% by 2025. According to the European Parliament, transport is responsible for nearly 30% of the EU’s total CO2 emissions, of which 72% comes from road transport. Further, passenger cars account for 60.7% of total CO2 emission from EU road transport.
